All of us struggle with a flawed self-perception to some degree or another. What we see in the mirror is different from how God sees us.
As a child of a loving and all-powerful God, you have infinite potential and greatness already within you. Yet, it’s easy to forget this. You may compare your weaknesses to other’s strengths.
I grew up very active in sports, lifting weights and eating healthy. When I was 22 and for the next five years, I worked full time, went to school full time and was learning how to be a husband and dad. I stopped exercising. We were too poor to eat healthy (or so I thought). By age 41, I weighed 273 pounds. I wouldn’t take off my shirt at the pool. I believed that I was less of a person than someone who was fit and lean.
The Pain of Being Fat
I remember the day when I looked in the mirror and thought: “You fat pig. You look disgusting. What have you done to yourself?”
I knew at that point that I had to change. Not because of what others thought of me, but because I had stopped taking care of myself. I allowed stress to control my thoughts and actions. I ate believing that food would solve my problems. The pain of being fat and knowing I had no self-discipline eventually became greater than the pleasure of eating whatever I wanted. It was time to face my situation.
Lao Tzu taught:
Fill your bowl to the brim
and it will spill.
Keep sharpening your knife
and it will blunt.
Chase after money and security
and your heart will never unclench.
Care about people’s approval
and you will be their prisoner.
Do your work, then step back.
The only path to serenity.
You are already powerful and full of worth no matter how you look or how many times you may have failed. Every thought and action either allows your greatness, health, energy and influence to arise and express itself, or to be suppressed. When you receive any blessing it is by obedience to the law upon which that blessing is based. EVERYTHING has a reward and punishment.
Decision followed by action leads to results. Take one step at a time. Be patient in your progress. Enjoy the journey. Live and love life.
